Sustainability

We have just over 90 acres of land here at Spring Court Farm which has been in the family for over 55 years. A wildlife pond, a wood and wet land and we take our environmental responsibility very seriously and convey this with our daily running of the farm in a number of ways.

· REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT
· EMPLOYING LOCAL STAFF
· CREATING A WOODLAND

· DEVELOPING BEE HIVES AND THEIR NATURAL HABITAT
· USING LOCAL SUPPLIERS WHERE POSSIBLE
· DEVELOPING OUR WILDLIFE POND AND WOODS

Our farm policy is to keep the use of artificial fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides to an absolute minimum. At the farm we are lucky that our soil is naturally good at regenerating and retaining plant nutrients. If we have to use chemical fertiliser, pesticides and herbicides

WE:
· Use government approved chemicals
· Use government approved contractors to apply chemicals
· Maintain storage and disposal guidelines
· Always consider weather conditions before applying
· We only use chemicals licensed in the UK
· Where possible us organic matter to nourish our fields and a strict rotation pattern

Within our farming community we have a ready supply of organic matter and by keeping to a strict rotation we are able to fully rest fields in accordance with good agricultural practice. Through our green waste drop off facility we now create our own compost to apply to the fields to keep our soil healthy and reduce the volume of waste, CO2 and methane gas to landfill.

We appreciate that our tractors, harvesters and delivery lorries have an impact on our environment. We try and limit this by using fuel efficient machinery. We also organise our deliveries efficiently so that the lorries have the shortest possible journey.

This does sometimes mean that our deliveries may not arrive exactly when you would like but we will always do our best for our customers whilst keeping our fuel consumption to a minimum.

At South Wales Turf our harvesters allow accurate depth control which enables us to cut the turf thinly and efficiently as possible whilst maintaining the integrity of our product.

WILDLIFE HABITATS AT THE FARM

Our policy at the farm is to:

· Provide a sustainable supply of food and shelter for our wildlife species
· Develop woodland to benefit birds and other wildlife
· Plant hedges and trees wherever possible. In 2019 we pledged to plant
100 new trees a year around farm to do our bit to tackle climate change.
· Plant wildflowers for our bees and other insects
· Keep our greens and waterways free from pollutants
